We do a lot of drop testing at Inflatable Packaging. And it's quite a bit of fun when a new design is created and everyone gathers for the drop test to see how it performs. But the joy that comes from a successful drop test is contrasted with the horror that arises when we receive a package with poor protection or, worse, no protection at all. Sometimes companies fall into the trap of just writing off protective packaging as simply an expense instead of an investment. But there are a few key things to remember when thinking of protective packaging.

1. Not all packaging is created equal.  The term "protective packaging" is a big umbrella that covers many different types of packaging. Just because you throw a few tear off air pillows into your box does not mean you are using effective packaging. All forms of packaging have their own benefits and best uses. Instead, there should be high expectations for your packaging.  Whether your intensions are to lower shipping costs, reduce product damage, or to become a more sustainable company, it is important have a clear set of goals for your packaging and make it worth your investment. 
3. See the big picture.  It's important to think of the entire life of your packaging.  In what form do you receive it?  How will you use it? What will happen after it fulfills its purpose? Will you receive the ROI you're looking for? These questions will force you to think about the bigger picture which, in turn, will help in determining the best type of packaging for your company's goals.
